Character Age: Never explicit in series, but general assumption is he’s in the equivalent of his late teens – so somewhere between 16-19 – despite what he looks, he’s not actually a human.

He often plays with Moomin, Sniff and Snorkmaiden, all coded to be in their early teens but Snufkin is often viewed by them as being older and wiser, and the more explicitly adult characters like Moomin’s parents, The Hemulen, and the Police Officer talk to him more as an equal. Then there’s the fact that nobody bats at an eye about him sleeping in a tent all by himself whenever he’s in Moominvalley or that he’s travelling all by himself during the winter months. Lastly, in the 90s series, he shares the valley’s sole brain cell with Moominmamma.

AU Description: Snusmumriken or Snufkin for short is a plane touched, the descendent of a woodland spirit but often mistaken for a halfling due to his short stature and build. He travels along the Empire and to the fallen islands to dungeons for most of the year and spends most of spring on an island populated by beast folk and other plane touched – too small and remote to get the Empire’s attention… yet.

He has seen what happens when islands are strip-mined of Ether stones – they fall, and he hates things that ruin the lovely world he keeps in his head, so lately Snufkin has gone from an unintrusive observer to the “Midsummer Vandal”, a notorious criminal that vandalizes the private parks of wealthy citizens and the manors of mine owners, as well as stealing and destroying mining equipment – careful not to hurt the workers.

He’s only nominally working with the Corsairs, as their interests often align, but he doesn’t considered himself a full member.

OU Backstory: Supposedly found in a box – though later to be revealed to be the child of the vagabond The Joxter and The Mymble (thus making Little My, Mymble’s Daughter and 34 other children his half-siblings), Snufkin has always been a loner and outdoorsman. He first meets Moomin when Moomin and friends are heading to an observatory to ask about a comet, instantly taking a liking to the group and offered to guide them. When it was believed the comet would crashed into the earth, Snufkin joined the Moomins, Snorks, and Sniff in a cave for shelter, but when it turns out it was unnecessary, Snufkin went on his way after celebration, but his like of Moomin was so strong that he changed his habit, so that he visits Moominvalley in the beginning of spring, and leave during the fall – sometimes as late as the first snow fall. He loves Moomin, but his highly independent nature means he needs long periods of time on his own.

Snufkin dislikes authority, confinement, and artificial things – choosing to pack lightly, and has a feud with the fussy Park keeper, vandalizing the Park Keeper’s parks, and has a pathological hatred of signs. He hates owning things, especially new things - he once tried on a pair of pants and ran away because he's not ready for something new yet.

Powers and Abilities: Closest thing to a power is the fact he has Disney Princess-level of animal magnetism – little creatures adore him, but he sometimes finds it annoying.

As an itinerant person who prefers a tent to a roof, he has strong outdoor survival skills – fishing, camping, foraging, wood carving, and is gifted musician, playing the harmonica, drums, and flute and often composes music on the fly.

Why should the Crimson Corsairs allow you to join them? I think you're mistaken, I'm helping you, not joining you. I can't stop every strip-mine or deforestation on my own, I know the land better than most - where to forage, hide, and what needs protecting.

Have you ever lost a comrade? How did you react? No - I hadn't. Thank the Gods. My heart will not take it.

How do you handle orders from a superior officer? ...I'm sorry?

If a superior officer orders you to do something you believe is morally wrong, what would you do? Leave.

When is it appropriate to take a life? I don't like it, but to live. If you need to choose, choose life.

What are you willing to do to preserve the secrets of the Crimson Corsairs? [He gasps] Secrets?! [He coughs, blushing in embarrassment at his outburst] I love hearing secrets, but not in the telling of them.

What would you refuse to do in service of the Crimson Corsairs? Whatever keeps me in one place too long, I need to travel, and I need time alone.

What are your dreams for the future? I suppose I want to see every island, every sunset, every mountain in this world - and tell my friends all that I've seen.

What has your experience with the Imperials been like? [He actually grows animated, gesturing wildly as he speaks] Bad! They stripmine islands and let them fall! They put fences and ugly signs, and clear forests for their stupid horse games! They ruin the beautiful world I love to see!

How well do you work with comrades? What can we expect from you when you are placed on a team? I prefer to work on my own actually. I can work with others if needed. Just... don't be pushy, and I can do what's needed.

Height: 4'0" (The franchise is very inconsistent about heights, this is a 'split the difference')
Species: Not actually a human - likely either a Mumrik like his father The Joxter, or a hybrid of a Mumrik and a Mymble.


Personality: A nature-lover and anti-materialistic, Snufkin prefers to spend his time outside, choosing to stay in a tent during his time in Moominvalley, and while away his hours hiking or fishing. His love of nature extends to his disdain for parks, urban development and tourism - shown to sabotage all of these on sight. He dislikes having "things", the only thing in his possession that isn't a strict necessity is his hat and his harmonica, and quite freely gives away whatever he finds to others and refuses monetary rewards. Snufkin is aware of the value of material things, he just doesn't want to bother with the whole thing, preferring a laidback and unburdened way of living.

He's also a loner and independent person by nature, rarely asking others for help or approaching others outside of necessity. Snufkin does actually enjoy the company of his few friends, but finds social events draining. His winter-time travels is his way of getting time alone to decompress after spending his spring and summer with the much more extroverted Moomins. Snufkin is a quiet listener, tending to speak only when he feels he needs to, and when he does he has a slight poetic streak. If someone he doesn't know well tries to enter his personal space, or even his friends get clingy - he will push them away, and will even leave without saying a word if he feels overwhelmed. Despite his need for independence, and arguably he would be happier if he cut ties with Moomin, he values his friendship with Moomin enough to return year after year.

He's kind under his aloof exterior, quick to come to the aid of his friends and strangers in trouble - and not above lecturing someone for recklessness once he bail them out if he feels it's warranted. Snufkin also is quick to encourage others in their pursuits even if he doesn't "Get" it (like helping The Hemulen to decide on what to collect despite the hobby being completely at odds with his own values). He is shown to tell little white lies to avoid upsetting Moomin, and readily aids others in their deception to a point.

Abilities, Skills, Knacks: Snufkin doesn't have anything resembling supernatural powers. He's shown to be an accomplished harmonica player, able to soothe savage man-eating plants with it. He's also shown to be decent at woodworking, creating fishing bobs and other small sundries.

Because he's extremely well-travelled, Snufkin is both well-versed in wilderness lore and shows an eclectic display of knowledge, recognizing passages from plays, snippets of mythology, zoology, and astronomy - more from picking things up than any in-depth studying.

Animals seem to be naturally drawn to him, much to his bemusement, and outright annoyance at times.
